Complete industrial robot systems for UK manufacturers

Safeguarded robot cells

Robot-cell guarding designed around access, operation and recovery.

Safeguarding must reduce risk without making normal operation, changeover or maintenance impractical. The safety concept starts with how people interact with the cell across every operating mode.

Safety is an integrated engineering discipline.

The robot envelope, tooling, product, fixtures, conveyors and connected machines can each introduce hazards. The design must consider normal production, clearing faults, cleaning, teaching, maintenance and foreseeable misuse—not only automatic operation.

Applicable UK requirements and relevant standards are confirmed for the project scope. Safety distances, access control, stop performance and control reliability are based on the risk assessment and validated before handover.

Perimeter protection

Fixed fencing, panels, tunnels and designed openings that control reach into hazardous areas.

Controlled access

Interlocked gates, trapped-key arrangements or other access methods suited to the task.

Presence sensing

Light curtains or scanners where the assessed application and stopping performance support their use.

Safe recovery

Clear modes, reset positions, restart prevention and visibility for fault clearing and maintenance.

Robot-cell safety design inputs

Exact measures are determined by the risk assessment, equipment and intended use.

People and tasksOperators, setters, maintenance staff, cleaning, loading, teaching and fault recovery

Frequently asked questions

Questions about this robot system

Does every industrial robot need a physical fence?

Not necessarily, but an industrial robot application needs appropriate risk reduction. The solution may use fixed guarding, interlocked access, presence sensing or other measures determined by the assessment.

How close can guarding be to a robot?

The distance depends on reach-through or reach-over risk, opening sizes, stopping performance, approach speed and the selected safeguard. It must be calculated for the actual cell.

Can conveyors pass through the guarding?

Yes, with transfer openings designed to prevent unsafe access. Tunnels, distance, product geometry and additional detection may all be relevant.

Do you validate robot-cell safety functions?

The project handover can include recorded checks of the implemented safety functions and stop behaviour within the agreed scope.
