Technical guidance by Oxford Industrial Automation. Updated 25 August 2026.
Robot-cell safety begins with the real operating modes.
Automatic production is only one condition. The assessment should also consider loading, setup, teaching, clearing faults, cleaning, tool change, maintenance, restart and foreseeable intervention around connected equipment.
The correct solution is project-specific. Fixed and interlocked guards, presence-sensing devices, safety-related controls, monitored operating modes and safe procedures may all contribute, but they must be selected and verified against the identified risks.
Define limits
Document intended use, products, speeds, tooling, operators, access, interfaces and foreseeable misuse.
Identify hazards
Consider impact, crushing, trapping, ejection, sharp tools, stored energy and external process hazards.
Design risk reduction
Prioritise inherently safer design, then safeguards, safety controls and clear information for use.
Validate and control change
Test safety functions, retain records, train users and reassess modifications.
Safety evidence across the project
| Concept | Cell limits, intended use, access needs, preliminary hazards and safeguarding approach |
|---|---|
| Detailed design | Risk reduction measures, safety functions, device locations, interfaces and required performance |
| Build and test | Wiring and software checks, functional testing, stopping behaviour, access and fault scenarios |
| Site commissioning | Final layout, connected equipment, production conditions, validation and residual-risk information |
| Operation | Inspection, maintenance, training, records, incident learning and controlled modifications |
