Complete industrial robot systems for UK manufacturers

Automated case, carton and tray loading

Robotic case packing systems built around the product, pack and pattern.

Flexible case-loading cells for grouping and placing products into cartons, cases, trays or crates, integrated with product flow, packaging supply and downstream sealing.

In brief: a robotic case packer groups and places products into an outer carton, case, tray or crate. The system must coordinate product arrival, empty-pack presentation, the loading pattern, grip confirmation, changeover and transfer to closing or sealing equipment.

How robotic case packing works

Products arrive through a controlled infeed and may be spaced, oriented, accumulated or grouped before the robot picks them. Empty cases or trays are presented in a known position, and the robot loads the required recipe before the pack moves to its next stage.

Robots provide useful pattern and format flexibility, but the achievable rate depends on more than arm speed. Simultaneous product picks, grip and release time, pack stability, case tolerances and infeed consistency all affect performance.

Infeed control

Conveyors, guides, sensors and accumulation present products at the correct spacing and orientation.

Multi-product tooling

Vacuum or mechanical tools may pick one item, a row, a layer or a defined group.

Case and tray handling

Empty packs must be erected or supplied, held accurately and transferred without disrupting loading.

Pattern and format recipes

Robot paths and line settings coordinate product variants, counts, orientations and pack styles.

Case packing design inputs

Product dataDimensions, mass, shape, rigidity, grip surface, permitted compression and arrival orientation
Pack dataInternal dimensions, tolerances, flap condition, strength, opening stability and presentation
Pack patternCount, rows, layers, dividers, orientation, nesting and acceptable clearances
Required outputProducts and cases per minute, arrival variation, accumulation and downstream capacity
Format rangeProduct-pack combinations, batch sizes, recipes, tool changes and manual adjustments
Quality and recoveryCount confirmation, mis-picks, damaged packs, rejects, rework and safe restart

Select the robot and gripper together

A delta, SCARA or six-axis robot may suit different case packing tasks. The decision depends on pick pattern, payload, required orientation, reach into the pack, speed and available footprint.

Tool design is equally important. The gripper must hold the product securely without marking or distortion, fit through the case opening and release each item predictably across the full format range.

Frequently asked questions

Robotic case packing systems: practical answers

What is a robotic case packing system?

It is an automated cell that uses a robot to group and load products into cartons, cases, trays or crates, coordinated with product infeed, empty-pack supply and downstream handling.

Can one robot pack different case sizes?

Often, using recipes and adjustable or changeable tooling. The complete product and case matrix, changeover method and clearance must be confirmed.

Can robots handle fragile products during case packing?

Potentially, with suitable contact materials, grip force, motion and pack design. Representative trials should use the most delicate and variable products.

What equipment sits around a robotic case packer?

A complete line may include product conveyors, grouping, case erection or presentation, guarding, controls, inspection, sealing, coding and outfeed accumulation.
